We often hear messages like “keep emotions out of it” or “don’t let your feelings get in the way.” But the reality is, emotions are always present - whether we are able to acknowledge them or not. Rather than ignoring or suppressing them, true personal and professional growth comes from understanding and working with emotions effectively.

Why Emotions Matter
Emotions are not just reactions; they are valuable sources of information to help regulate us and at their core, keep us safe. They tell us what we care about, signal when boundaries are crossed, and reveal unresolved conflicts. When we ignore or supress emotions, they don’t disappear - they find other ways to express themselves, often in the form of stress, coping behaviours, burnout, or interpersonal struggles.
Emotions in Personal Growth
In our personal lives, real growth will often come from facing difficult or uncomfortable emotions rather than avoiding them. Whether it’s processing grief, confronting fear, or embracing joy, emotions shape our sense of self and our capacity for change. Learning to work with emotions, rather than against them, allows us to build resilience, navigate relationships more effectively, and make choices better aligned with our deeper values, as well as those of the people we care about.
Emotions at Work
Leadership and Decision-Making: Leaders who understand their own emotions, and the emotions of those around them, will make better decisions. Emotional intelligence is key to motivation, resilience, and building trust.
Workplace Culture: An organisation that values emotional awareness fosters psychological safety, where employees feel secure enough to innovate, collaborate, and take risks.
Conflict Resolution: Most workplace conflicts are not just about the surface issue but about deeper, harder to express feelings; often around unconcsious biases, respect, recognition, or fairness. Addressing emotions directly leads to more meaningful resolutions.
The Takeaway
Instead of seeing emotions as obstacles, we can learn to view them as essential guides. Whether in therapy, leadership, or everyday interactions, understanding emotions leads to deeper self-awareness, healthier relationships, and lasting growth.
