What Is Psychodynamic Thinking?

At its core, psychodynamic thinking is about understanding the hidden motivations that shape our behaviours and relationships. Unlike a purely rational or behavioural approach, which focuses on immediate actions and consequences, psychodynamic thought encourages us to look deeper. Why do we react strongly to certain people or situations? What patterns do we keep repeating? What emotions do we suppress, and how do they manifest in unexpected ways?

  • Relationships: Ever find yourself drawn to the same type of partner, boss, or friend, even when those relationships don’t really serve your interests? Unconscious patterns, often rooted in childhood dynamics, can drive these choices.

  • Workplace Behaviours: That colleague who takes criticism personally or the leader who struggles to delegate; both might be responding to deeper, unresolved fears about worth, control, or failure.

  • Decision-Making: Sometimes, we self-sabotage without realising it. A fear of success or unconscious guilt can hold us back from pursuing opportunities.
