In this paper, publised in the psychoanalytic journal Free Associations, I apply Bion’s theory of Group Dynamics to explain the rise and prevalence of modern populist figures; due to a phenomenon I call the "Singular Specialised Workgroup" and how it creates an almost mythical "Great Leader", which can also be used and applied to think about wider cultural phenomena across human history.
